This very large, original stunning antique medal, shows the Blessed Virgin Mary in the same pose that she has on the Miraculous Medal, standing on a snake. The back reads: "The Congregation Of The Children of Mary". I have never seen a medal this big, with its exquisite details and lovely almond shape. Such a gorgeous statement piece, I have added a hammered bronze bail and simple gold toned chain. This versatile necklace is easy to wear with everything, from jeans and a T, to a little black knit dress.
*The Congregation of the Children of Mary, was a group opened to girls who were students or orphans in the care of the The Sisters of Charity and later also welcomed girls not associated with the order as well. To join, a girl would request and then wait six months during which time she practiced the virtues of the group and prepared to live its values. When she finally entered the group, she was given a beautiful medal, which she could wear on a blue ribbon. On the back, there is an emblem featuring two stems of lilies curving around a radiant star. The star most likely representing Mary as "The Star of the Sea", and the lily symbolizing purity, which was an important virtue for Children of Mary.
